Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
I'm not sure I've come across that one...is that the one by Alan Coates...I thought I saw the other day a larger book rather than the phamplet he had previously?
Marks of New Zealand Potters by NZ Potters Inc 2007.....
It has around 1500 studio potters marks I think -
you will find it on trademe here there and everywhere ....
So far I have only identified one mystery mark I had - thanks to the book.
Maybe in the winter I will find some time to find some more.
The ones that I really want to identify are not in the book .....
though having drawings instead of photos is a drawback I feel.

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
ahh how did I miss that? I guess I assumed it was the old phamplet one I already have...
so the marks are photographed on the cover and they line drawings on the inside?...because I'm now thinking of buying one to replace my now tatty old photocopy one he used to sell a few years back...

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
Alan bought copious copies of the Marks book to onsell ..... he will gladly help you to get a copy.
There are others that are selling the book as well on trademe.
Yes the book has fantastic photos on the cover and ink drawings inside.
I still prefer to use the pottersmarks site for accuracy.

I printed it out once when it wasn't as big as it is now ...I wonder if Tim has ever considered having the information printed for site members to purchase? ...I much prefer the photos too...they are far easier to compare and often refer to the www.pottersmarks.co.nz site too ... (promo for Tim) *hint hint* ....
I got a dvd....
of Tim's marks for some $$ last year .... [he did mention it in his newsletter]
he added some fantastic additional bonus Doris Dutch history as well ..... just awesome
My how I love the bouncie smilie .... it displays how I feel about pottery and potters brilliantly
ps..... I am a clay artist and am creating 'clay couture' atm

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
The potters marks website will most likely have its last birthday this may...with the new book out I dont really feel the need to keep it going, its cost about $200 a year just to keep running. I might put together a disk version and or book version of it in limited numbers, but will just have to wait and see. Once you have all the marks in your head and have examples you dont really need the site.....i guess I have a different perspective on it though having worked on it for a number of years.

oh no... I much prefer the photos - they are easier to identify I think...thats got me worried...
umm it might warrant some further discussion about how big the files are but if you decide to stop your site in the future it would be a shame to lose it... I have a large hosting package on my website and would be happy to host it as a community resource and attribute the information to you ....have a think about it
OH NO !!!!
I don't have all of your potters marks in my head like you do Tim !
I do have the dvd of them..... but that's not a click away like your site is .....
Yes I have learnt a lot from your site in the last couple of years .....
but there is so much more for me to learn ....
Surely there must be an arts grant of some sort that you could apply for to help with running costs ?
This is just my selfish view on the thought of the site disappearing .....

you know I once asked creative nz about funding and was told there was no historical value in my work, they didn't fund the upkeep of sites etc etc.

Hey thanks for the offer, I hadnt thought about that before. I will think about it now. The site is about 50mb. Hmmm gotta think about it closer to the final days in late May. I always have to make a decision about it each year and change my mind at the last second.

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
Hells bells.... creative nz doesn't know diddley squat then....
lots of those marks creators are long gone .... they will all be gone one day!
That is when they will see some historical value in potters marks.... when it's too late.
Gets down on my knees and begs .... like I do every year for you to keep the site going

I know exactly what you mean...I've only just put my pattern page back up after 3 years down...it was way more expensive to fund a site back then...about $40 a month ...but now my lil business can fund that aspect ...which helps heaps...
Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
Heres some data on my site for almost a year. I don't know if its good or bad.

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
you know I was reading an article today on how to interpret website stats and what they actually mean...
its still a bit of a mystery to me... but it looks great from here...
I've spent half the night trying to work out how to change some little things on this forum...why the hell are the simple things the hardest to work out sometimes?

Re: The NZ Studio Pottery marks book
I can't find the howling wailing sobbing 'cons
I got a notification today from pottersmarks..........
So pottersmarks.com is really shutting down in May then Tim?
Is it the $200 per year that is the bottom line reason?
I'm sure that you could get people who care about the site enough
to want it to keep going ...... to sponsor that amount.......

Well at the moment yep thats the plan, think of it like a book that goes out of print. I have thought about the money issue but I just couldn't handle anyone sponsoring it. But you never know about these things.....May is a long way away and I change my mind often. I will be making a few copies of it on CD like the one you have. Plus the site will be updated as new marks turn up....it just won't be online anymore. Someone else out there could probably make a much better site.....with bio's and pictures of pots.....you gotta shake up the scene sometimes to make things move forward.....see told you I can talk rubbish sometimes
