Please help me with some information about George Boyd Newton Pottery
Hi there,
My name is Chloe and I am masters student of museum studies and a pottery collector. I am presenting a brief seminar for an assignment on an item from Te Papa's collections and I have chosen to talk about George Boyd's pottery.
My question is, beyond the information in Gail Henry's book what more is known about George Boyd and the Newtown pottery? I have found some old newspaper articles from when he was operating but I am hopeful someone out there might know something else, anything at all.
Also, aside from Milton, which other New Zealand potteries were producing decorative wares at this time?
Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated.

Boyd research for Te Papa
Hi Chloe
The best person for you to contact about this is probably Jeff who has the handle "crownlynn" on this forum. The only problem is that as far as I know he has not visited this site for a couple of months. Can anyone pass on a contact email address or ph number for Jeff to Chloe? He is in Timaru I think.

Hiya Chloe
You can contact "crownlynn" - Jeff by sending him a personal message on this site ... he was last here about a month back but he's a pretty busy guy. Always an extremely knowledgable contributor and well worth trying to get in touch with on that topic - good luck

Hi Chloe
You might consider contacting Stuart Park. The book/catalogue he wrote:
New Zealand Commercial Ceramics, Park, G. S., Otago Museum, Dunedin, 1978.
was the beginning of study of NZ pottery manufacture. He includes info on
Christchurch Brick Company; Crown Lynn Potteries; Crum Brick Tile and Pottery Company; Luke Adams Pottery; McSkimming Industries; Milton Pottery; Temuka Pottery; Timaru Potteries; and Waimea Pottery.
Stuart was later director of the Auckland Museum for a lengthy period. (He took a series of photos of Crown Lynn's main factory as they were closing which is worth a look if you get the chance to explore their holdings). He is currently the Northland Area Manager for the Historic Places Trust in Kerikeri. Either google or NZPT should help you track him down. Sherry Reynolds and Gail Henry also now work for NZHPT so you could contact them for pointers too.
In Wellington you could contact Simon Manchester a consultant at Dunbar Sloane. Simon has a wealth of knowledge about NZ studio pottery and commercial. He should be able to advise you who in Wellington could assist you.
Good luck with your project.
