Re: Some Op Shop finds over the last 4 years
Wow - that's a real find !
This is a very rare Keith Murray shape - not even shown in the KM book.
From the photo, the lid looks like it's moonstone (white) and the body looks like straw (yellow) - this this right? If it is two different colours, either someone has swapped over a lid and base in the shop when it was put on display/bought or (and this would be very rare indeed) it is one of the very few Keith Murray items that was made using two different glazes. Very exciting even with the hairline.
Well Done !
Any chance of posting a photo of the markings on the base (and any on the lid)?

Wow very interesting info thanks truk10
Now I'm not sure about the colour as - yes its moonstone (white) on the lid - but get this...the "straw" colour is like a paint wash as its chipping in places....so I suspect it was all moonstone and perhaps someone has done that to hide the hairline? Was the straw colour in the glaze or an applied wash? I'm guessing in the glaze...but don't know much about Keith Murray at all...the hairline takes up about half the pot...its quite bad ... but still the lines are great I think.

Thanks for the photo. Great stuff !
Right, it looks like someone has painted it - Keith Murray pieces were only every glazed (except for the basalts) so there is nothing that could flake or chip off. So it might be worth taking some diluted paint stripper to it - it wont hurt the glaze. The stamp on the base is the post 1940 one so probably made at Wedgwood's (then) new factory at Barlaston - which Keith Murray designed. The other interesting thing is that the lip looks like it's designed to provide a solid fit suggestioning that it could well be a cigarette barrel (although a little hard to tell from just a photo).
Great piece - why can't I find things like that in Op shops !

I wonder if I attack it with paint stripper whether it'll break in half? heheh
Might give it a go and cross fingers...

Good luck - on the bright side, if it has bee restored, you can repaint it with a shade of white that's a better match.
