is there a particular rule about where an air hole is located on a Len Castle bottle with respect to the handle?

You mean those ceremonial pouring bottles? I think different potters had different ideas about design and whether the liquid would shoot out when you filled in making your shoes damp, or not. Don't think anyone has ever looked into this too much. Guess its all just personal design stuff like the pouring quality of a tea pot or something. You would probably have to gather together a bunch of similar pots by different makers and see what the differences are. Then again it might all just be random! Who can say...except the potter

What about Len Castle ones in particular? Did he have a strict rule on placement of the airhole?

Not really sure. All the ones I have seen have the hole in the same place.
