How to id pottery without any marks......
It's almost impossible to verify unmarked pottery unless there are telltale shapes - styles - patterns or decorations that are a real give away.
The Shoji Hamada platter on trademe at the moment is creating quite a stir and is most interesting as he never marked his work...... so how do you verify ?? He visited Nz a couple of times and probably made many pots while here or brought them with him .... I have seen one attributed to him at a gallery in Auckland ... and there will be more around for sure.

Re: How to id pottery without any marks......
I went through all my books on Hamada looking for something the same. As far as I could see Hamada's brush work was mostly of plant forms. The one on trademe looks like birds. Hamada may not have marked his pots, but he did sign the box for the pot. I have an early mark for Hamada somewhere in some old pottery book....

Yeah I wanna see what the reserve is when the auction finishes. If no one bids you don't get to see the reserve.

I dunno about Rie stuff, I know its rare and valuable but it just doesn't appeal. But it would still be nice to have one piece.......but not at the expence of some of the other pieces....auctions aye

.
Back to Shoji Hamada.... for now -
by the mere fact that you dwing put a bid on the platter -
that in itself would make it look as if it is verified...
maybe drummond thinks that..... I know that I would ....
Oh to have the dwing power
Lucie Rie's work is so perfectly exquisite !
Hans Coper is to die for......

Re: How to id pottery without any marks......
When I was first starting out I used to look through all the NZ Potter mags trying to compare photos to pots I had found. Sometimes I got lucky.....Adrian Cotter, Helen Johnson, Peter Shearer are three that come to mind that I found that way. It would be good for there to be more books on all the NZ pottery.....I know of some in the works......Peter Collis is working on a book, Barry Brickell is doing and autobio. But there are some many more. Perhaps when the museum starts up things will move ahead quicker.
