Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
Well a potter could probably give you a better description....but here goes...It's a stoneware plant ash glaze that in itself has no coloured pigment. The colour is formed by the optical properties of the glaze...compare this to cobalt blue glaze which is a blue oxide pigment.
There are three names for this glaze, Jun, Chun, and optical blue. A good ash to use is pampas grass or toetoe. In Asia straw ash or other grasses are used.
There are a number of NZ potters who have used this sort of glaze....just off the top of my head...Helen Mason, Doris Dutch, Len Castle, Lawrence Ewing, Ennis Oliver.....and many others.
Not all jun glazes are blue.....you can get shades of green-blue-purple and white.
Anyway that's my quick description of it...think opals and you have a naturally occurring version.

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
That bowl is splendid Tim !!
Chun requires high stoneware temperatures to achieve it's brilliance.
I know people who still use it with excellent results.

To the left there is a Len Castle goblet and lipped bowl, and to the right two John Roy bottles. Not sure which piece you mean?

Well I have two large bookcases with pots spaced so it's not cluttered, then a small china cabinet totally full of things...but you know most of the pots are stored away....I just couldn't cope with the ceramics overload.....its been like a yo-yo at times trying to sort things out.

That's a Len Castle piece, a set of six goblets, and about 3 sets were made in total.

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
Crikey sounds rare then!! Does Len Castle's work normally have that flowery circular pattern on it? (referring to goblet) Think I may have seen something like this in the local Op shop

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
Well the only LC pots I have seen with that pattern are on the goblets, it is a cookie cutter/decorator from Japan. I can't see why it couldn't have been used on other pots.... What does the op shop piece look like?

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
It's bottle shaped. I will go check again next time I'm in town, I think the design piece on the front is partially broken.

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
I saw the bottle again yesterday Tim, & it has a mark on the base of three triangles sort of joined so I guess it's not Len Castle's..has the decoration & colouring though, but the base is also cracked (during the firing process?). What do you think?

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
Probably just another of the hundreds of mystery pots out there.....can you get a photo of it? How much is it anyway? I'm not too sure where the cracks all come from.....some from time in the kiln, some outside the kiln, and some in the making....deliberate or error. All the pots I have played with in my tiny fire box get there cracks in the kiln...

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
Yes true there are a lot of mystery ones out there. This one is cracked on the base in a circular? shape & has the decoration on the base of the handle.
It's only $2 but it is damaged.

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
It's not worth getting if it's damaged sunshine kiwi....
Cracks appear to remind us that we are human and not machines....
though most appear from poor workmanship and it is like a slap in the face!

Yep thats true ev..but if its a significant piece for some reason then sometimes its damage is not a problem. I was looking at a pot today with some damage and thought well I can't afford a perfect one but this one might be affordable....and it could be worth repairing.......cracks I dont mind are ones where the glaze has flowed over the area like in salt glazed pieces.....and highly textural pieces where a firing crack has occurred....I am a machine by the way....a T888......

Re: Doris Dutch Jun glazed bowl
A friend knocked the knob on an Ian Firth state of the art teapot and a 'chunck' parted company with the said knob..... she is getting it professionally repaired at Wrightways and it's costing $250 but to her it's worth it
I love the Barry Brickell - Len Castle - Ian Smaill cracks that poke their tongues out at you
