Getting a better understanding of the Art
In a bid to really understand the ceramics art form or for that matter any topic that interests me I like to have a go at these things. Here is my most successful firing to date. The clay is from the back garden, aged about 1 year before use. Its got a bit of iron in it and is quite short and sandy, but gets better with age....anyway here is the photo essay.
Sodium fumes causing the yellow flame
Interesting copper coloured metallic particles forming on the footring....
Finally some real glaze!

Your tea bowl is a work of art Tim
Firebricks would be a better option to use than ordinary bricks.
Well done.

There is a single fire brick there, its at the back where you can't see....it was about $7. I bought it a few years ago to make a mould.
But it would be good to have a pile of insulating firebricks. Ones without chips and lumps......perhaps I could get white hot temps...the gas tank started to ice up.

Re: Getting a better understanding of the Art
Firebricks abound in the pottery world.....
$7 for one is ridiculous! People give them away for free.
Just put the hose on your gas bottle ..... on dribble - it works for me.
Otherwise the gas flow will reduce to useless.
You would have gone to a hotter temperature with firebricks and a dribble of water on your gas bottle. What size is your gas bottle by the way?

Re: Getting a better understanding of the Art
I just have a standard bbq bottle...this is backyard budget land! I did try a bit of sodium nitrate in the fire but it didn't seem to do anything.....
Well yeah that's why I only have one fire brick!!! I don't really have access to firebricks, or any bricks really. The two I used for the roof I "found" on the way home that day. All good ideas....specially the hose one....only just figured out you meant the water hose......got a bit confused about doing it with the gas hose........
The next experiment will be even better....

Re: Getting a better understanding of the Art
A standard bbq bottle? Would that be a 9kg bottle?
I can get to 1100 degrees on a 9kg bottle that I have -
when I'm not using it for the bbq.

Re: Getting a better understanding of the Art
Hi Tim,
I think your experiment and especiallly the result is awesome!!! Well done! I am so sorry I never got back to you yet about a burner, but, it looks like you are sorted now - that tea bowl is a fantastic form, did you really make it??? I doubt it's from your garden's soil tho' and here I was wondering (worried) you were gonna make rockets when, truly it was really 'beauty by chance' you were after! Me thinks you've got soul.

Re: Getting a better understanding of the Art
Hey Suz, yep managed to get a burner and a gas bottle. Thanks for the words of support! Yep the clay I used was dug from the back garden, nothing added to it, just liquified, sieved, drained in a pillowslip and stored for about a year. The filled in clay pit has subsided a bit since then.
I can make a rocket? Got plans?
