Peter Stichbury
I adore Peter's work. I have many of his pieces which I have gathered over time and still I can't resist....
He is such an honest, earthy potter and his work is so delightful.
I bought a teapot from one of his open days many years ago....
and he said 'It may dribble - I'm not sure, sorry....'
and I replied 'I'm never going to use it Peter as to me it's a work of art!'
I think he was disappointed by my response LOL
....as he mainly made domestic ware to be USED.
It's never been used [I don't drink tea ] and it's as good as the day it was fired.

yep that looks like Peter Stichbury's mark from this angle ... I might move it over to the Stichbury topic later
Re: Peter Stichbury
You know it was probably decorated by one of Peters daughters, there are pictures of them doing this sort of thing in his book.

Re: Peter Stichbury
Theo got interested in pottery decoration and in the 1980's worked on making designs by carving among other things plaster block stamps. He pretty much used everything he had worked in in the past to come up with designs that would be relevant to NZ, but also new and unique. So he corresponded with Len Castle about it all and eventually produced well over 100 designs. The designs come from his work on Maori rock drawing work he did in the 1950's, Moko work in the 1970's, Modernist work, design aspects from Germany, Gourd decoration, Geothermal phenomena in NZ, jade carving, and Indonesian art. It was his last major project and shortly afterwards when he left NZ for Australia he died in a bedsit across the road from the hospital. From what I found out about the designs, they were meant to just be designs, not symbols with any particular meaning, but inspired from NZ as a whole...Theo was the sort of artist who wanted to find NZ's real new art forms. He spent his whole life pretty much in poverty trying to bring NZ out of the dark ages. But got so much resistance left NZ several times...Its a amazing and sad story.
Instead of a photo, perhaps you could come round one day and have a look at them.
I am still learning more about these designs and will know a lot more in a year or two.

Oh yep very much beyond his time.....NZ was still in the middle of its colonial death throws. It has been said the Theo was the most educated artist living in NZ at the time. He was born in Dutch Indonesia, sent to Europe to be trained like a Dutch master painter, moved to NZ to escape the Japanese in WWII. Revitalised the whole Maori art form, and brought modernism to NZ....documented NZ's historic rock art, documented its Geothermal activity, wrote a book on Jade, and influenced lots of NZ artists.....Gorden Walters, Tony Fomison, Len Castle, ARD Fairburn, Geoff Fairburn.......the list goes on....pity the book planned on him never got written. You know his carved gourds, which were used to design new moko patters are worth at least $10,000 each....most went out of the country apparently, and of course there are fakes floating around.
Lots of info on the net about him, more turning up each day, and most auction houses have his work especially the drawings and photographs.....check out any A+O photography sale....or the current Webbs one.....Lot 1 is a Schoon. The gus fisher gallery in AK has a bit on him there at the moment.....must go and see it
