Originally from Freisland, Holland. Dan Steenstra was a specialist thrower and Freisland carver (fret work type work carved out with a sharp tool). He started his craft at age 15.
I have heard that he not only worked for Crown Lynn but also worked part time for Titian.

Please feel free to add any history you might be aware of ...

Post  collectiques Fri May 09, 2008 5:52 pm

there was some debate as to whether this was studio work or Daniel Steenstra ....actually I've seen a lot of debate over his pieces over the years...

and then a few years ago I got these from different auctionhouses. So I'm thinking that the raised dots links one to Steenstra and the identical shape might indicate the other is also by him ? Can anyone cast light ?? Question

Is it 160mm tall ? And here is a less-usual one - just over 160mm tall, almost globular.

Daniel Steenstra Empty Danny Steenstra examples from Ernie Cooper

Post  collectiques Tue Mar 31, 2009 5:31 pm

During Ernie Cooper's cadetship with Crown Lynn he spent time in each department of the factory. While he was with Daniel Steenstra (Danny as Ernie refers to him) he threw these shapes for Ernie to demonstrate technique.

Daniel Steenstra Pic-0010

When I met with Ernie a few months ago he explained that these examples were thrown in a brick clay ... because it was actually easier for a potter to throw when demonstrating.
