Coronation Mug - Number 1
Here is a photo of the Crown Lynn Coronation mug that will be on auction shortly at Art & Object....May 2009 I think.
They made 1000 Coronation mugs and this is No 1 - Doris Bird decorated the base when it was gifted to Ernest Shufflebotham.
Provenance the Shufflebotham family in the UK.
A very exciting find and thanks in part to our NZ Pottery forum and our Crown Lynn shape guide.

Re: Ernest Shufflebotham
I was chatting to Peter Shufflebotham this morning and he mentioned that his mother also worked at Crown Lynn. Nora Shufflebotham was a decorator and worked on a lot of the Toby jugs.
Important update: Peter Shufflebotham birth certificate
Ernest Shufflebotham's son Peter emailed me a copy of his birth certificate today - dated 1944. The document clearly shows his surname and that of his father's as "Shufflebotham".
I can only assume from that, that Crown Lynn potteries made some kind of clerical error in referring to Ernest as "Shufflebottom" in their emplyment records and that in turn might have led other writers to refer to him using an incorrect surname....?
Thanks very much for sending all the details over Peter

Ernest Harvey Shufflebotham - brief history from Peter Shufflebotham
"Born in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire on 19th September 1908 - died on 6th May 1984.
Attended school until the age of 14, served his time in the pottery industry at the firm of Copelands Pottery 1922 - 1936.
He then took up employment with Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Limited, Barlaston in 1936 as a thrower until war broke out in 1939. He was in the Royal Navy from 1939
until 1945.
He then went on to be a teacher of pottery throwing at Newcastle School of Arts 1946 - 1948.
Tom Clark of Crown Lynn was, I believe, in 1947 recruiting skilled people for positions in his company in New Zealand, to which my father and also my mother (who was a free-hand paintress who also worked for Josiah Wedgwood) applied for the positions
within the company. Both were successful and therefore we moved to New
Zealand in 1948.
The voyage took six weeks to arrive in New Zealand aboard the ship "Rangitata".
We lived at 239 Blockhouse Bay Road, Avondale.
I attended schools Avondale, St Mary's Catholic. I was then about to go
to St. Joseph's College in Auckland when we discovered my mother was
suffering from cancer. As a result, they decided in the latter half of
1955 that they wanted to return to England if they could sell the property in New Zealand fairly quickly, however, if not, they would remain in New
Zealand. However, the property did sell in October 1955 when we
returned to England."
