Green Gables Pottery: 1930something to 1950something?
Not sure where to put this but I thought there may be a few people interested in seeing something of this little known pottery which Gail Henry wrote up in both her books even though she had only seen "a few shards" plus the fish ashtray illustrated in her first book. Apparently hardly anything was marked which may be why we can't recognise it.
This Maori bust is marked "Green Gables 1950" in pencil on its base, and has all the flaws Gail describes in her book. The stoneware body has not been fired much past 'bisque' and the glaze looks to be of a low-fired enamel type which is prone to flaking in places. Does anyone have anything else that is indisputably Green Gables? I think this was our only commercial pottery north of Auckland wasn't it?
