Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
Here area couple of Warren Tippett pots, check out the way the spout is joined.
Now the other interesting thing is that the inside of the lids on these two and the black teapot are the same shape....its a sort of tappered cone cut off at the narrow end...........

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
Hmmm my head hurts from doing tax returns but I will add my 10 cents worth....
Many potters use that style for making lids.... not just one or two...
Note the positioning of the handle....
the top one is less generous than the bottom two GORGEOUS AWESOME ones....
what else.... the spouts have a similar style I agree.
Knob shapes continue forever .... some pointy some round .... I see a difference here lolz.
Nah I still think the top one is Andrew's..... but what do I know...huh
I'm only a humble and not famous potter

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
Here is a pot made by Andrew. From what I have seen of his pots his lids have a small raised bump right on the very top of the handle...you can see it in this image sort of

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
those ones with the totally black backgrounds are taken in full sunlight and then the background is removed with photoshop and replaced with a black....takes ages and I don't really do that anymore.....Lately I have been using a piece of black card attached to a wall and curved behind the pot, then set up the camera on a tripod....also have some 1000 watt lights and white balance the photo for tungsten lighting....oh and then take a pile at different settings and pick the best one.....and then do any tiny touchups in photoshop if I need to. Im just learning

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
well some photos look ok but others I look at and think thats really bad....what I need is a down light. Another potter who might have made that pot is Paul Tobin.....but yeah I think it must be Andrew going by the part mark on it.

Guess who etc
Hullo Tim,
I'm new to this, so hullo! Looks like the discussion is long over, but I'd say this was likely van der Putten. Question: do you trade these (or other?) items. I'd be interested, if you do have work by any of these potters, Tobin, van der Putten, Tippett.
Bests
David

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
Hiya David - welcome to the forum
A few of us are collectors/dealers - others collectors only. We've started a small pottery buy, sell & swap section here http://www.forum.collectiques.co.nz/buy-sell-or-swap-new-zealand-pottery-f35/ as a trial to see how it goes.
Tim will be along sometime soon as he pops by often - I know he did have a few pots for sale in that section - he might have some still available ... but not sure if he had anything available of those potters.
Good Luck
Regards
Jo

Hi yep it seems it must be Andrew's.....doesn't really matter as it cost basically nothing, still in was fun. Hi David, well I haven't done much trading of anything just yet, but I am always up for trading if I see something I like and have something I don't need any more.... I have 2 Paul Tobin Pots, a small jug, and a large round floor pot, wood fired with a shino glaze.....big enough to fit a family of rabbits in. I have a letter from Paul which explains some more about the pot too. For Andrew I have some early pieces, teapot, small salt glazed bottle, probably other bits and pieces....and Tippett I have the dead small brown teapot he killed, and a coffee pot to match and the cups and a jug too maybe....its a coffee/tea set sort of thing...colour...................................brown. None of Tippetts multi coloured pots just the earlier stuff....oh might even has a casserole..I wouldn't call these pieces glamorous....and the big question is what am I looking for.......well just Len Castle pots at the moment, Janet Leach as a sideline.

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
Thanks for this: I will keep an eye out, though today I can fairly say I really did blow the buying budget for some time!!
I saw the Tobin floor pot on another post: it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm interested in the ways those three and a couple of others worked fairly close together (or in something like friendly competition) for a period, to the extent that you can see the forms etc merging. It seems to me overall you have a number of geographical/ historical nodes where this kind of thing happened, and 'NZ pottery' as we know it took off as a result. Waiatarua/ Titirangi in the late 60s, early 70s. Coromandel in the mid seventies to early 80s, a lot of too and fro around Albany in the late 70s. Similar things happening among other regional/ gendered groups elsewhere, and in a less intense way, via NZ Potter etc. At best, some really confident work, Leach et al seeming more easily put out of mind in a pragmatic, not-so-self/ tradition conscious immersion in the work...
Anyway, I've small but growing collection of images, mostly my own and not so well snapped as you guys (especailly Tim) have done here. Any images you have of those works you mentioned, Tim, I'd love to see. Maybe I will try to post an image or two, to fill in the conversation.

Re: Lets Play Guess Who?
That's interesting; really interesting: it means it all got very fine grained and attentive, the kind of sensibility about this stuff I'd dearly love to have. Did he tell you more? The letter about the floor pot sounds interesting too...
