Royal Oak Collectors ...Salisbury Ware
... any collectors out there???
We need some help ... because many of the Crown Lynn specials department early shapes were trickle glazed the base no's are obscured on many. So we have a few gaps at the very early numbers of the Crown Lynn shape guide.
I was hoping some people might have Salisbury Ware/Royal Oak examples that we could use to identify to earlier shapes ...
If you have could you post them here please or email me and I can post them for you....
Thanks in advance for any help

as Titian suggested several weeks ago ..
I think in order to sort out the early Crown Lynn shape numbers - we'll have to find some Royal Oak/Salisbury pieces ...
I bought this the other day - unfortunately it doesn't have a base number but I've taken some photos in the hope that other people might have some marked versions out there in a "salisbury" type decor
As Titian pointed out - much of the trickle glaze is too thick to identify a shape number - however the blanks that Crown Lynn sold to Royal Oak might well hold the key...if anyone has any please let us know ...
oppps servimg is again down...will have to upload shortly when its working again....be back in a bit

Royal Oak / Salisbury
Hi guys
Great find on the # 37 but I think the # 34 is a blank made by Wally Silva (Jova Rancich's protege). Silva had his own numbering system of impressed digits for each of the hand thrown shapes sold to Royal Oak/Salisbury. I assume these numbers were brought in at the request of Royal Oak or Owen Salisbury because they are so similar on both Silva's pots (though his are a bit smaller) and on those early CL vases.

Titian- Number of posts : 98
Location : Hamilton
I collect or have an interest in: : New Zealand Pottery -Titian, Crown Lynn, Olive Jones, Hereford
Registration date : 2008-07-29
On a further note...
I don't think the numbers were obscured by glaze on the early moulds for the raw/trickle glazes pieces - they simply weren't there. I think they must have been incorporated later, either as the number of moulds increased and a better internal organisational system became necessary, or (more likely in my opinion), the numbers were put on at the request of one of the decorating companies to assist their own organisation and purchasing of CL blanks.

Re: Royal Oak Collectors ...Salisbury Ware

Yes indeed -judging by the number of salisbury pieces that don't seem to have numbers either ...

Re: Royal Oak Collectors ...Salisbury Ware
hehe thought you'd find us spot20 ...
I have what looks like an "mb" on the base ....
well a few people seem to be saying they are english ...
my CL trickle glaze is ever so slightly smaller ...comparing the two --- hard to say CL copied a lot of shapes...
what do other people think?
