Re: Wharetana ware
Is the auction 153912720 Wharetana ware?
I guess we will have to wait and see if the big guns start bidding?
It's brown
though it is a strange shape for a waka ...
almost looks like a viking ship shape .....

Re: Wharetana ware
Jeff would know .........
but I'm too shy to ask our NZCeramic God anything now
The markings have been removed from the base.....
you would need a grinder to cut through the glaze -
so this has been done on purpose .....
and I can't help but wonder why
It's BEAUTIFUL - BIG and BROWN

Re: Wharatana/Wharetana
This piece was a junk shop find:
Gail Henry includes it in a photo of Wharetana and says "It may also have been made at Luke Adams." (p201 of the 1999 edition). It has an impressed 1017 which is consistent with the Wharetana range of numbers BUT there is also a circular Wharetana wall plaque with an impressed 1017 which she has a photo of on p129 of the 1985 edition. There's a picture and description of the plaque on the New Plymouth District Council's Puke Ariki website.
The back of the ashtray:
My guess is the ashtray isn't Wharetana just an example of Crown Lynn recycyling shape numbers.

Re: Wharetana ware
Is it possible it might be from the Ngakura range...produced out of Luke Adams for Crown Lynn?
Re: Wharetana/Ngakura ?
It's possible. I've only seen one piece of Ngakura and I'd have to say it is way more subtle and stylish than this. The Kiwiana site has it listed as Wharetana but that may be simply repeating the info in Gail Henry's book.
I heard rumours of a Wharetana catalogue illustrating the complete range but haven't seen one. Maybe there was a Ngakura one?
