Wharetana
Hi there
This is my first post, so here goes.
I have a few pieces of Wharetana including a lovely set of salad servers. I have been trying to work out which number between 1001 and 1041 they might take. There is no room on them for a number. Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks

Hiya Titian - welcome to the forum
I wouldnt have a clue how the Wharetana numbers were allocated and to which piece...but I'm sure there are people around here who probably know.
We plan to put photos of the Wharetana shape range on the Crown Lynn shape guide eventually ( www.collectiques.co.nz/crownlynn.htm ) - So if you have photographs you wouldnt mind sharing for the guide - that would be fabulous... maybe we could post the unmarked one as well and someone reading might know the number...we can but try
Regards
Jo
The salad servers are...
...part of the dinner service set and came with a large bowl...1034...they are attibutted as 1034-2 for the catalouge.

Re: Wharetana ware
Hi, For our Wharetana shape guide, the salad servers are definately No. 1039
Directly in front of the servers beside the 1014 (Funhos) is a 1013 Koruru small tray.
The plaque with the Maori Woman is 1023 - Puhi Urutapu Tamahine.
Maybe Titian wont mind posting single photos so we can put these on the shape guide?
Will need to do some homework on the others...

Hi again,
Sorry, I should have written the numbers down.
The two boxes in the above photo are, on the left, number 1002 "Wakahuia". This one is a presentation box given to (I assume) valued clients of the high-end Wellington Menswear shop George Harrison & Co. Ltd on the occasion of their 21st anniversary in 1951. I think Te Papa has one of these, but unfortunately their database file for it does not have an image.
The box on the right is number 1008 "Waharua". This example has an original printed paper label on the bottom reading:
WHARETANA
No. 1008-Cigarette Box-
WAHARUA PATTERN
This octagonal box is graced with a usual[sic] Maori design as was done by Arawa carver Ahaha Te Rahui, and, in contrast to the usual avoidance of straight-line effect in carving, it is fashioned solely in straight-lines (according to the Maori dictionary by Rev. Williams). Waharua is defined as a rat-trap with two entrances, or also as a pattern in weaving, whilst the lid is designed with a simple form of Taniko design, used largely in mat-weaving.
Its retail price in 1950-54 was 36 shillings 9d which is written in pencil in a corner of the label.
I really hope this encourages other members to submit some Wharetana images for the shape guide. It would be absolutely amazing to see the full lineup of this beautiful series that Crown Lynn went to such lengths to provide some authenticity of design for. I will try to take a few individual pics for the shape-guide next week.

Hiya Titian
Thanks so much for the fabulous information - I could use the one photo and try and split the information between but if you do have time - yes ...seperate photos would be easier to identify for the shape guide.
We've definitely been going in leaps and bounds on the shape guide lately... great stuff guys!
